Hills and Valleys Hat

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

The Inspiration

Whenever I have to make a blanket, the first pattern I reach for is something with soft undulating waves. I had a recent commission for a lapghan and a matching hat. I had never made a ripple hat before and wasn't exactly sure how to work those ripples into a circular construction. So, I did a little research and a lot of experimenting and came up with this hat.

I wish I could say that the decision to use an ombre yarn was my idea. Sadly, I don't have a great eye for colors. Go figure. My Mom wanted this yarn for a similar blanket I made in the past and it came out lovely. And since the yarn does the color changing for me, there are no extra loose ends to weave in!

When it comes to naming the hat, that was a no-brainer. I have had this song "Hills and Valleys" by Tauren Wells on repeat for at least the last month. The commission was from a sorority. One of their sorors was diagnosed with breast cancer and they wanted something special to wrap her in their love. The song perfectly captures the ups and downs of life and how God is a fixed point in it all. Whether you believe or not, I think we can all agree that 2020 has been a roller coaster so far.

The Pattern

Look at my lovely friend Layla. She's so sweet and modeled the hat for me. My hair is in a fro most days which means I make hats i can't wear...
